How to pay less
- Compare price per hour, not per week. A cheap weekly rate for three hours costs more per hour than a higher rate for twenty.
- Check funding before booking. Bürgergeld, Bildungsgutschein, AVGS and Bildungsurlaub can bring the price to zero.
- Book longer for a lower rate. Many private schools cut the weekly rate after four or eight weeks.
- Online is usually cheaper than in person. Good for grammar and exam preparation; speaking still benefits from a classroom.
- Prefer accredited schools. AZAV or BAMF accreditation makes a course voucher-eligible and is a quality signal.

18 of the courses we list are free for people who qualify: BAMF integration courses, Jobcenter-funded job-related German, and district courses for refugees and parents. Each is labelled with its condition on the cheap-courses page.
Are cheap German courses worse?
Not by price alone. Volkshochschulen are cheap because they are publicly subsidised, not because of quality; their teachers are qualified and their courses follow the same CEFR levels. What a higher price usually buys is a smaller group, a fixed daily rhythm and services around the course, such as visa paperwork or a social programme.
What is Bildungsurlaub and can I use it for German?
Berlin's educational-leave law gives employees five paid days a year for approved courses. Used on an intensive German course, you keep your salary for that week; the course itself is paid by you unless another route funds it. The course must be state-approved for Bildungsurlaub — the school's page says so.
